Fintech firm Betterment confirmed a data breach after hackers used a compromised third-party communications tool to send fake crypto scam alerts to customers. The messages promised to triple cryptocurrency deposits and urged users to send Bitcoin or Ethereum to attacker-controlled wallets. Betterment said the access was quickly revoked and an investigation is ongoing. The company believes no passwords or accounts were accessed, though personal details such as names, emails, phone numbers, addresses, and birth dates may have been exposed globally.
