Espresso co-founder Jill Gunter reported that her crypto wallet was drained of over $30,000 in USDC due to a vulnerability in a legacy Thirdweb smart contract she had previously interacted with. The breach on December 9 saw funds routed through the privacy protocol Railgun, and the flaw allowed unlimited token approvals, letting attackers access approved assets. Thirdweb confirmed the bug, linked to a 2023 open-source library issue affecting many contracts, and has since disabled the compromised contract. The incident highlights ongoing DeFi security risks in smart contract infrastructure.
