Ukraine Announces Cryptocurrency Airdrop Amid Russian Invasion
The Ukraine Government announced on Tuesday that they would airdrop Crypto donated to the country’s official wallet. The decision was taken after donations crossed $50 million. Ukraine’s Twitter handle confirmed that airdrop and that a snapshot would be taken on March 3, at 6 pm Kyiv time (4 pm GMT).
For the past few days, the Ukrainian government has been accepting donations in Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Tether since the beginning of the Russian invasion.
According to Slowmist, a few days after the Ukrainian government began accepting donations, the country received $50 million in digital assets.
Additionally, the Russian invasion resulted in the adoption of Cryptocurrency in the country, with citizens turning to Tether after electronic payments were suspended in the country.
The Ukrainian government also tried using Crypto as a means to further pressure Russia into retreating. They asked major Crypto exchanges to completely ban Russians from their platforms.
Mykhailo Fedorov, Ukraine’s Vice Prime Minister, announced a bounty for sharing information regarding the Crypto wallets of Russian and Belarusian politicians.
However, the community criticized both the moves. Although, Ukraine has been a major proponent in Crypto adoption, having laws that recognized the space even before the Russian invasion. On Chainalysis’ Global Crypto Adoption Index Ukraine ranked fourth position last year.
Recently, some strict sanctions are imposed on Russia, and it might fuel speculation that the country could use Crypto to bypass restrictions.
