Messi's Latest Deal with PSG Includes Crypto Fan Tokens
Lionel Messi, the famous soccer player, has made crypto tokens a part of the payment deal in his financial package with the French club Paris Saint-Germain.
Lionel Messi, the soccer superstar’s move from Barcelona FC to Paris Saint-German remains the talk of the town. Messi had been a part of FC Barcelona since he was thirteen. However, reportedly this week, he signed a two-year agreement with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), with an option to extend for a third year.
Messi’s departure from Barcelona was sealed, after Spanish La Liga’s financial fair play rules made it fiscally unviable for the club to continue to afford the star player. The soccer superstar has won FIFA’s player of the year six times each and the European Golden Shoe award for top scorer.
An anonymous source claimed that he would be given a net annual salary of $41 million (plus bonuses) in addition to a $30 million signing bonus at PSG. In a press briefing, Nasser Al-Khelaifi, the president of PSG, stated, if the precise figures for the deal are made public, people would be “shocked, honestly, at the number we have.” However, the exact details regarding allocation and terms of the inclusion of crypto fan tokens in Messi’s contract are still undefined.
Moreover, Fan tokens remains to be popular in global sports, with major Turkish multi-sport club Fenerbahce S.K. that completed an initial presale of 500,000 tokens on Ethereum this week, netting the club $1.75 million in 30 seconds.
Reportedly, Chiliz, the blockchain firm that operates the sports token platform Socios on which $PSG fan tokens are issued, has revealed that $PSG trading volumes surged to over $1.2 billion in the days preceding the player’s move. In addition, PSG has been involved in crypto since 2018 through its partnership with the Socios blockchain platform, which includes Messi’s former club FC Barcelona as a partner alongside a host of high-profile clubs like Manchester City, Juventus, and Atletico de Madrid.
Amid speculation that Argentinian football superstar signed a multi-year contract with Paris Saint-Germain, the PSG/USD pair has jumped by 10.57% to hit an intraday high of $41.90.
