Indian Researchers To Launch Vaccine Distribution Scheme Via Blockchain
Researchers of India have come up with a new strategy that will make use of Blockchain technology to accelerate the distribution of vaccines in future pandemics as the world continues to battle against COVID-19 and its new variant.
Ashwin Verma, and his teammates, from the Nirma University Institute of Technology in Gujarat, India, issued the IEEE Journal of Biomedical and Health Informatics, where they discussed the ways to tackle the new vaccine distribution scheme titled VaCoChain.
VaCoChain uses Blockchain technology, Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH), and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that utilizes fifth-generation (5G) communication services for timely distribution of vaccines.
The researchers further asserted that a new scheme will be used in administering vaccines at a time when countries over the seas continue to face challenges in their vaccination drive to protect citizens from the spread of novel Coronavirus. VaCoChain could also be used in future pandemics and can speed up the transportation of vaccines, which is crucial for the immediate prevention of further infections, said the researchers.
The researchers further emphasized, “The scheme offers 5G-tactile internet (5G-TI)-based services for UAV communication networks (UAVCN) monitored through ground controller stations (GCs). 5G-TI enabled UAVCN supports real-time dense connectivity at ultra-low round-trip time,” the researchers wrote. ”Thus, it can support resilient vaccine distributions in a phased manner at government-designated nodal centers (NCs) with reduced round trip delays from vaccine production warehouses (VPW).”
Verma and colleagues also claimed that the process would minimize human intervention and ensure that the vaccines are in good condition because of shorter trip times.
Besides, the use of Blockchain technology might improve documentation of vaccinated persons and make records more transparent and easier to track. In addition, after meeting the predetermined conditions, the process will make use of smart contracts. These smart contracts could also be used in creating priority groups of vaccination, that might be based on age.
