E Commerce Giant eBay will Now Host NFT Sales
Popular E-commerce Giant eBay has announced auctions for nonfungible tokens, or NFTs, on its platform, which currently has about 187 million buyers.
However, according to Reuters, eBay users who meet specific criteria on the platform will be permitted to list NFTs. The company added that in the future, the trading policies would be revised to accommodate more people.
The report comes in less than one week after CEO Jamie Iannone said that eBay would be tapping into the NFT market. He also said buyers and sellers were already able to deal in NFTs on eBay but that the platform had not yet simplified the process. Lannone further revealed that the company is also considering introducing crypto payment options for users.
eBay North America’s Vice President, Jordan Sweetnam, also said the company would add new capabilities to bring blockchain-driven collectibles to the platform. Executives at the online marketplace have previously hinted that eBay could be open to accepting crypto payments and now they finally announce being a place to trade NFTs.
NFT space has been gaining tremendous momentum as more and more celebrities are being attracted to it. Cryptopolitan reports that boxing champion Floyd Mayweather is set to launch his own brand of digital collectibles. He is the third professional boxer to float his NFT in less than four weeks. Similarly, the first set of footballers, Portugal interns Eder and Jose Fonte, launched their own NFT recently.
eBay’s entry into the NFT sector is another indication of the growing e-commerce crypto and blockchain adoption. From PayPal to JD.com, online merchants are increasingly uniting with the emerging tech.
